3. The fruit industry in Taichung District
A wide variety of fruit trees are planted in Central Taiwan (Taichung, Changhua and Nantou). The temperate fruit trees have grape, pear, persimmon, peach, apple, plum and Japanese apricot. The subtropical and tropical fruit trees have litchi, longan, ponkan Mandarin, Tankan, Murcott tangor, oranges, pomelos, loquat, guava, passion fruit and pitaya. The total cultivated area is about 52,254 hectares (about 27.5% of whole country), total yield is about 714,730 m.t., the production value reaches 24,828,595 thousand NT. This area has different altitudes, contains temperate, subtropical and tropical climates, which forms diversification of fruit tree varieties that adapted to every kind of climate condition. Therefore, fruit trees such as grapes, persimmon, pear, plum, peach and Japanese apricot are planted at higher altitude areas in Taichung and Nantou. Whereas, the grape can be grew at plain area in Changhua because of the development of production period regulation technique. The subtropical and tropical fruit trees such as litchi, longan, ponkan Mandarin, Tankan, guava and pitaya are planted at low altitude areas in Changhua, Nantou and Taichung.
